Emergency Light Testing

Monthly and annual checks for backup lighting systems
When the power goes out, emergency lighting kicks in. Those small units mounted above doorways and along corridors contain backup batteries that activate automatically during a power failure, illuminating escape routes so people can find their way out safely.
It's a simple concept, but it only works if the batteries hold their charge and the units function correctly. Regular testing confirms your backup system will perform when it's needed.
How testing works
Emergency lighting checks happen at two intervals: monthly and annually.
Monthly flick tests
Monthly checks are quick visual inspections carried out by Kitt's maintenance team. Power to the emergency lighting circuit is switched off to simulate a failure and confirm that each unit activates as expected. The lights only need to stay on for a few minutes, long enough to verify they're working. Any units that fail to illuminate are flagged for repair or replacement.
Annual drain-down tests
Annual testing is more rigorous. The emergency lights are left running for their full rated duration, typically three hours for commercial premises, to verify batteries can sustain illumination for the required period. This extended test reveals weaknesses that monthly checks won't catch, such as batteries that have degraded over time.
Because a three-hour drain-down fully depletes the batteries and requires lighting circuits to be switched off, we plan testing carefully. Wherever possible, tests are carried out during daylight hours, when reliance on emergency lighting is minimal. This ensures day-to-day operations are not disrupted, with sufficient recharge time built in before the system is needed again
Is emergency lighting testing a legal requirement?
Emergency lighting only matters when the power fails, but it requires constant attention to stay ready. We manage the entire testing cycle, from monthly flick tests to annual drain-downs, so your backup system is always operational.
